Overview
A Mixed Reality app for the HoloLens 2 that I developed during my role as a Unity XR Developer at the BMS Lab of the University of Twente. This project aimed to provide a visualization of windmills that are to be built near residential areas. Through a menu interface within the app users are able to place wind turbines of varying heights and in different patterns, in order to get a feel of how the turbine would look near their home environment. Using this app, citizen acceptance of planned wind turbines could be researched.
Key Responsibilities
- Planned development and client meetings and executed accordingly
- Took on a prototype version of the project and imporved the organization and structure
- Developed the UX flow of the application
- Users first choose a type of wind turbine (height)
- Then select single or multi placement
- For multi placement users are able to choose from 3 different placement patterns
- After placement users can adjust wind settings and/or remove turbine(s) again
- Developed a wind simulation of the turbine including rotating rotor, correct audio and varying wind speeds. Users are able to turn on wind and adujst wind speed
- Regularly created builds and tested with client (professor) in different conditions
Impact
- The Project has been used in research
- Showcased the project at the National XR Day at the BMS Lab of the University of Twente
- This project is featured on the BMS Lab website
- Layed a foundation for an ongoing collaboration between the BMS Lab and a dutch infrastructure visualization company
